President's Message

Message 36/2021

Mr Prem Shankar

President

Dear members of SFSS

The year 2020 was a year dominated by the COVID 19 impacting industries, countries and people’s lives in ways unprecedented. At the same time, it also made us appreciate the value of life, family and those in the essential services who work to make our lives go on – let’s take a moment to thank them.

The Society of Floating Solutions Singapore (SFSS) had a buoyant beginning to 2020, with the phenomenal success of the WCFS 2019 and plans to conduct many useful events and interactions with our members and the industry at large in 2020. The Naval Architecture Short Course (NASC) was scheduled to be held in Feb 2020, and more events were in the pipeline. With the onset of COVID-19 and the containment measures that followed, we had to put on hold or cancel all the events that we had planned meticulously over the year. The pause that followed forced us to think of new ways to keep engaged with our members. We started our webinar series with the first one delivered by Mr Giulio Gennaro, CTO, Core Power who delivered a talk on the possibilities of nuclear power for shipping and floating structures. We look to continue the webinar series with one webinar being organized every two months. We encourage our members to get in touch with us if they are interested in conducting a topic of relevance.

In 2021, subject to COVID-19 effects weathering away, we look to get back with organizing more engaging physical events. Besides technical talks, we’re planning site visits to floating structures (in Singapore) for members, an Annual Members’ night and the Annual Dinner. While the WCFS 2021 that was planned to be held in Japan has been cancelled, we look forward to being an active participant in organizing the WCFS 2022. We’re also planning training courses for our members, to be delivered digitally. Our discussions with government authorities in Singapore is an ongoing effort to place floating solutions in the forefront of optimizing the usage of land area in Singapore, and we’ll continue doing so.

I am excited to be working with the eminent members of the new council, and under the able guidance of the outgoing President Mr Lim Soon Heng, who continues as a Sr Advisor. With our collective efforts, we look to building a Society that provides immense value to its members, while pursuing its goal of a cleaner, stabler and safer environment for our future generations.

Wishing you all the very best in 2021

Prem Shankar

President, SFSS
