Mission, Values & Objectives

The mission of the Society is to facilitate the application of scientific principles and proven offshore technologies to the design, engineering and construction of floating space solutions to enhance the quality of human life, address issues of land scarcity, harvest offshore renewable energy, increase food and water production, overcome the problem of rising sea level due to global warming in ways that are eco-friendly and sustainable.

  • Think long term
  • Reduce carbon emission
  • Respect all eco-systems
  • Minimize the depletion of mineral resources
  • Recycle or extend the life cycle of building material
  • Consider the impact on future generations
  1. Disseminate research and technological progress in the field to assure the public that large floating structures are safe, sound, and non- intrusive to the marine eco-system.
  2. Raise the level of awareness that land reclamation affects the livelihood of people living in coastal areas (fishermen, seaweed and sea shell gatherers and farmers), is damaging to wetlands, marine eco-system and becomes more challenging as sea level rises.
  3. Engage and support government policy makers in relevant government agencies including master planners, and environmental engineers in the concept of floating spaces in the seas as viable and liveable alternatives to high density living on terra-firma.
  4. Support and assist government agencies in the formulation of a comprehensive Master Plan of the nation’s 700 square kilometres of territorial waters.
  5. Formulate design standards for floating concrete structures (this area is still embryonic compared to the more mature design standards for floating steel structure)
  6. Investigate solutions for communication and transportation links between mainland and floating assets.
  7. Investigate solutions for the treatment, recycling and disposal of waste generated by human activities and industrial processes.
  8. Investigate solutions for the supply of potable water and electrical power to floating cities and industrial plants.
  9. Support and promote initiatives to assist MPA and JTC to intensify and diversify the use of Singapore’s territorial waters for living, working and playing as well as for shipping.
  10. Support initiatives by policy makers to encourage the shift of land-intensive assets and assets that occupy our limited waterfronts to relocate offshore thereby allowing for the rejuvenation of the land they occupy (e.g. power plants, ports, naval bases, desalination plants, golf courses, cruise centres etc.)
  11. Encourage and assist traditional land-based architects and engineers to break boundaries by assisting their clients to envision the wide possibilities and advantages of floating or semi-floating spaces for development.
  12. Represent Singapore in global conferences and forums on floating structures.
  13. Support members with innovative solutions that are of strategic interest to Singapore, by mobilising funds from the government and private sectors.
  14. Encourage students pursuing studies in architecture, and engineering to interact with their counterparts in naval architecture and marine engineering to explore possibilities beyond the confines of land and shorelines.
  15. Encourage students of mechanical and electrical engineering to develop innovative solutions for the movement of goods and people between land and assets in the sea.
  16. Draw the attention of developers, policy makers and professionals to new frontiers in floating solutions through conferences, workshops and publications locally and abroad.
  17. Facilitate the interaction and exchange of ideas between professionals in Singapore with professionals in other parts of the world, which are leaders in floating structures such as The Netherland, Norway and Japan.
  18. Assist the less fortunate communities in Asia in the design and construction of affordable floating houses, farms, schools (using native skills and materials wherever possible) to overcome inundation by floods.
  19. Engage in other pursuits that are consistent with the mission statement.
