The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has officially launched ATLAS (Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea), a groundbreaking global initiative designed to advance the safe, secure, and peaceful deployment of nuclear technology in the maritime domain.
With over 25 countries signing a joint statement of support—including Singapore! 🇸🇬—this marks the first globally coordinated effort to unite the nuclear and maritime sectors.
Key Highlights of the ATLAS Initiative:
🔹 Floating Nuclear Power Plants (FNPPs): Utilizing advanced Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to create versatile, low-carbon floating energy sources. These platforms could deliver reliable electricity, heat, and desalination to coastal communities, disaster zones, and offshore industries.
🔹 Civilian Shipping: Paving the way for nuclear-powered commercial vessels (such as container ships, bulk carriers, and offshore support vessels) for high-speed, long-endurance transit without the need for frequent refueling.
🔹 Global Collaboration: Six expert project groups are already being formed to tackle the practical barriers to deployment, addressing safety, security, and regulatory frameworks.
IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi called this a “historic moment of opportunity,” noting that advances in maritime engineering and reactor design could see nuclear maritime technologies ready for deployment as early as the 2030s.
