Industry News: The World’s First Bamboo-Built Offshore Solar Farm! ☀️🎋🌊
Floating infrastructure is getting a remarkable, bio-based upgrade! China has officially launched Jilin-2, the world’s first 100-kilowatt offshore floating solar platform built using engineered bamboo composites.
Deployed off the coast of Yantai in Shandong province, this groundbreaking pilot project is a collaboration between the CIMC Offshore Engineering Research Institute, China Forestry Group Corporation, and Beijing Forestry University.
Key Engineering & Environmental Highlights:
🔹 Materials Innovation: Instead of traditional steel frames or high-density polyethylene (HDPE) floats, Jilin-2 utilizes third-generation “bamboo-wound” tubes and a prestressed, fiber-reinforced wood-bamboo composite known as “Sea Bamboo Pipe” for buoyancy and load-bearing support.
🔹 Marine Durability: While raw bamboo degrades rapidly in seawater, these engineered composite tubes are specifically treated with resins to withstand salt spray, relentless UV radiation, constant moisture, and wave fatigue.
🔹 Green Fuel Production: The 100 kW of clean electricity generated by the platform will directly supply an offshore demonstration base focused on producing green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol.
🔹 Sustainable Infrastructure: By substituting steel and fossil-fuel-derived plastics with a fast-growing biological material, this design promises a significantly lower carbon footprint and reduced environmental impact for marine infrastructure.
Scaling up from a 10 kW prototype tested in 2023, Jilin-2 is a massive leap forward in materials science for the maritime sector.
