According to a recent report by World Nuclear News, Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov—the world’s first and only currently operating floating nuclear power plant (FNPP)—has successfully completed a stringent two-week peer review by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO).

✅ On Par with the Best: The 13-person WANO mission assessed the floating facility across multiple critical domains, including engineering support, maintenance, radiation protection, and emergency preparedness. The findings officially rank the floating unit on a par with the highest-performing land-based nuclear power plants.
✅ Proven Operational Safety: Operating commercially since May 2020 in the harsh Arctic environment of Pevek, the plant demonstrated safety and operational standards strictly in line with global best practices, with the review noting even fewer areas for improvement than its previous 2022 assessment.
✅ Scaling for the Future: The Akademik Lomonosov currently utilizes two 35 MWe reactors. Building on this operational success, developers are already constructing a new fleet of floating power units featuring larger 100 MWe reactors and a 60-year service life, explicitly targeting the global export market.
