A major leap forward for low-cost floating offshore wind power! A consortium of six major companies—including Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” LINE), Albatross Technology, and Sumitomo Heavy Industries—has officially begun offshore demonstrations of a pioneering Floating Axis Wind Turbine (FAWT) in the bay of Iki City, Nagasaki.

Here are the key takeaways for our floating solutions and renewable energy community:

✅ Innovative Vertical-Axis Design: Unlike conventional designs, the FAWT is a vertical-axis wind turbine featuring three straight blades mounted on a compact cylindrical floating foundation (with a 9.3m rotor diameter and 1.7m foundation diameter).

✅ Slashing Offshore Costs: Conventional horizontal-axis floating turbines require massive, expensive floating foundations and complex mooring systems. The FAWT concept is designed to be significantly smaller, simpler, and more cost-effective to manufacture and install.

✅ Building a Domestic Supply Chain: This demonstration is a critical step toward realizing a 100% domestic supply chain for floating offshore wind in Japan, uniquely tailored to deep-water maritime environments.

✅ Real-World Testing: Moored by three lines connected to seabed anchors, the sub-20 kW demonstrator will undergo rigorous testing to verify its technical feasibility and previous water tank test results before being decommissioned for detailed component inspections.

Why It Matters: With limited shallow-water sites available, Japan—like many coastal nations—must look to deeper waters to scale its offshore wind capacity. However, high infrastructure costs have been a persistent barrier. If successful, this vertical-axis FAWT design could be a true game-changer—drastically reducing the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) for floating wind and accelerating the global transition to a carbon-neutral society.
