As the demand for AI and cloud computing surges, land, grid capacity, and cooling constraints in coastal cities are becoming critical bottlenecks. Enter floating infrastructure: Bureau Veritas (BV) has officially granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to Singapore shipyard group Seatrium for its innovative 30 MW Floating Data Center (FDC) concept.
Here are the key takeaways for our floating solutions and marine engineering community:
✅ Modular “Data-in-a-Box” Design: The approved concept utilizes a jetty-moored, non-propelled barge fitted with six independent 5 MW modules. Each unit seamlessly integrates IT equipment, power distribution, and cooling systems in a compact, modular configuration.
✅ Sustainable Ocean Cooling: By leveraging natural seawater cooling, this floating facility bypasses the massive freshwater consumption and energy-intensive cooling requirements that plague traditional land-based data centers.
✅ Scalable to Hyperscale: Building on this 30 MW reference design, Seatrium is already advancing a massive 100 MW version. This expanded concept retains the modular offshore siting and seawater cooling, demonstrating a clear pathway to hyperscale deployment.
✅ Rigorous Technical Assurance: BV assessed the concept’s feasibility against international standards, reviewing everything from general arrangement and marine systems to stability, safety, and cooling process flows.
Why It Matters: Securing independent technical validation from a leading classification society like BV is a massive vote of confidence for the floating infrastructure sector. It proves that decades of complex marine and offshore engineering expertise can be successfully pivoted to support the next wave of the global digital economy in a resilient, sustainable way.
We want to hear from our network: With natural seawater cooling and modular scalability, do you think floating data centers will soon become the standard for coastal tech hubs facing land scarcity? Share your thoughts in the comments below! 👇
