According to a first-of-its-kind national assessment by the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), India has identified a massive 102 Gigawatts of floating solar potential across its reservoirs and water bodies.
Why this is a critical pivot for smart infrastructure:
“Land-Neutral” Scaling: Ground-mounted solar systems require 3 to 4 times more area than the panels themselves occupy. Floating solar avoids the costly, slow, and often conflict-heavy process of land acquisition.
Efficiency Gains: Water naturally cools the solar panels, which can improve module efficiency and energy yield compared to high-heat land installations.
Dual-Purpose Assets: By utilizing just a fraction of existing reservoir surfaces, the infrastructure also helps reduce water evaporation during high-heat seasons.
With states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka leading the potential, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is already preparing a dedicated support scheme to accelerate commercial deployment.
