The article reports that Panthalassa, a Portland-based ocean technology and renewable energy startup, raised $140 million in Series B funding led by Peter Thiel, co-founder of Palantir and former PayPal CEO. The money will help complete a pilot manufacturing facility in Oregon and support development of Panthalassa’s Ocean-3 offshore AI data center nodes.

Panthalassa’s technology combines wave-energy generation and AI computing in autonomous floating units. Each node uses the motion of ocean waves to drive internal turbines, producing electricity for onboard AI inference hardware. The systems are designed to operate offshore without cables, transmit data back to land by satellite, and use the ocean for natural cooling.

The company plans to deploy Ocean-3 pilot nodes in the northern Pacific Ocean and refine manufacturing ahead of commercial deployments in 2027. The article frames the project as part of a broader search for new ways to power AI data centers, whose electricity demand is rising faster than conventional grid infrastructure can support.
