The article reports that Ocean Winds has begun electricity production at its 30 MW Éoliennes Flottantes du Golfe du Lion floating offshore wind farm in France. The project has delivered first power to the French grid and is now supplying renewable electricity to homes and businesses in southern France.
The EFGL project, developed with Banque des Territoires, consists of three 10 MW turbines mounted on floating foundations about 16 kilometers off the coast. It is intended to demonstrate that floating offshore wind can work in the deeper waters and specific conditions of the Mediterranean.
Ocean Winds says the project also strengthened the local supply chain: about 85% of direct suppliers were French or based in France, more than 99% were European, and 60% were small or medium-sized enterprises. The wind farm is expected to generate around 110,000 MWh per year, enough to power about 50,000 inhabitants annually for 20 years.
The article also highlights EFGL as a stepping stone for larger floating wind projects, including the planned 250 MW Eoliennes Flottantes d’Occitanie project. EFGL is described as the world’s first nature-inclusive floating wind farm, using artificial marine habitats designed to support biodiversity.
