South Korea’s Korea Rural Community Corp. (KRC) plans to expand floating solar capacity on agricultural reservoirs to 3GW by 2030, up from 105MW currently in operation.
According to KRC, 2,333 of its 3,428 agricultural reservoirs have been identified as suitable sites for floating solar development. The planned expansion is expected to help address land-use constraints while generating revenue to support agricultural water supply and management costs.
KRC has also introduced a profit-sharing model under which proceeds would be distributed among power generators, KRC, and local farming and fishing communities. The agency plans to complete tenders for private operators at Asan Lake and Ganwol Lake in the first half of 2026, with around 500MW planned at each site.
The article also notes further floating solar activity in South Korea, including a second-phase project at Hapcheon Dam involving K-water and Korea Western Power. These developments support South Korea’s wider renewable energy goals, including its target of 100GW of renewable capacity by 2030.
