UK-based Core Power is in discussions with the US Department of Defense to develop a floating nuclear power plant that could be deployed at a US military base.

The proposed reactor would have a capacity of approximately 300 megawatts — enough to power around 300,000 homes — and could operate for up to 60 years. Floating nuclear plants are designed to be factory-built and transported by sea, potentially accelerating deployment compared to conventional land-based nuclear facilities.

Core Power has partnered with major industry players including Orano and TerraPower, and plans to construct hulls in Japan or South Korea before installing nuclear reactors in the United States.

The initiative aligns with recent US policy efforts under President Donald Trump to accelerate advanced nuclear technologies, particularly to address surging electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence and data centres.

If deployed on a military base, the project could follow a separate regulatory pathway from civilian nuclear projects, potentially shortening approval timelines. However, industry experts view the proposed 2028 deployment timeline as highly ambitious.

Floating nuclear reactors are being explored globally as part of the broader push for low-carbon, reliable baseload power in an increasingly electrified economy.
