Great Britain has awarded subsidy contracts for 8.4GW of offshore wind capacity in its most competitive renewable energy auction to date. The contracts, granted to eight new offshore wind projects, are expected to generate enough clean electricity to power 12 million homes by the end of the decade.

The auction forms a critical part of the UK government’s strategy to decarbonise the electricity system by 2030. Projects secured include both traditional fixed-bottom offshore windfarms and floating windfarms, which enable deployment in deeper areas of the North Sea.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband described the outcome as record-breaking, marking the largest volume of offshore wind ever procured in a single auction in Britain or Europe.

The auction allocated contracts supporting approximately £22 billion in investment and is expected to generate around 7,000 skilled jobs. The largest share of capacity was secured by German utility RWE, while SSE also won a contract for the first phase of its Berwick Bank project off the Scottish coast.

Although awarded contract prices are above current wholesale electricity market averages, industry experts note that expanding wind capacity reduces reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets and can help stabilise long-term energy costs.

The government will need to replicate similar auction results in future allocation rounds to meet its target of 43–50GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.
