The Madras High Court has sought an explanation from the Coimbatore Corporation regarding the installation of floating solar panels and the conduct of commercial tourism activities at Periyakulam (Ukkadam Big Tank) in Coimbatore.
The direction was issued during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation filed in November 2024, which alleged that the floating solar installation and boating activities could harm migratory birds, aquatic species, and the lake’s ecological balance. The floating solar project, commissioned in October 2024, has a capacity of 154 kW and was developed at a cost of ₹1.45 crore.
The petition also highlighted concerns over high-speed diesel-powered boats operating in lakes, citing noise pollution, wildlife disturbance, and fuel leakage into water bodies. Taking note of these concerns, the court added the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation as a respondent and scheduled the next hearing for December 5.
