China is building a floating artificial island designed for all-weather, long-term deep-sea scientific research. The 78,000-tonne semi-submersible platform will be capable of supporting researchers offshore for extended periods without resupply and operating in extreme sea conditions.

The facility incorporates advanced structural designs that allow it to withstand severe shock loads, including those associated with nuclear blasts. Researchers say this resilience is necessary to protect critical systems such as power, communications, and navigation during extreme events.

Officially a civilian research project, the floating island reflects China’s broader push into offshore science, marine engineering, and blue economy technologies, offering a mobile alternative to fixed offshore installations.
