The EU-funded PLOTEC consortium has completed installation of its storm-resilient ocean energy platform, Don, off the coast of Gran Canaria. The system represents a major step in developing ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) technology for continuous, clean power generation.

The platform, deployed at the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN), features a cylindrical hull that will undergo structural testing in real Atlantic conditions. Fugro’s sensors will measure movement and riser performance to validate computational models and inform future OTEC designs.

Named after OTEC pioneer Don Lennard, the platform is designed to demonstrate that ocean-based power systems can operate safely and reliably in challenging environments. The project is supported by the EU’s Horizon Europe program and involves partners across Europe, including Global OTEC, Cleantech Engineering, WavEC, PLOCAN, Quality Culture, AGRU Kunststofftechnik, and the University of Plymouth.

Testing is set to continue through 2025, with performance data expected in 2026. A second phase, involving connection of the riser pipe, is scheduled to follow.
