The UK government has allocated £900 million for fixed-bottom offshore wind projects and £180 million for early-stage floating wind technology in its next auction round.
This initiative is part of the UK’s strategy to expand offshore wind capacity from 15 GW currently to 43–50 GW by 2030, supporting the decarbonization of its electricity sector. Projects will benefit from guaranteed electricity prices via the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme.
However, analysts caution that the auction’s budget may fall short of achieving the Clean Power 2030 targets, with the current allocation likely securing only around 4.9 GW of new capacity.
Further funding for other renewable technologies, such as geothermal and tidal, will be announced separately.
