Equinor and Gwynt Glas (a JV of EDF Renewables UK & ESB) have been awarded rights by the Crown Estate to develop 1.5 GW each of floating offshore wind off the coasts of Wales and South West England.
These transformative projects will:
✅ Harness deeper waters and stronger winds with floating technology
✅ Support the UK’s target of 43–50 GW offshore wind by 2030
✅ Unlock thousands of jobs and industrial growth in regions like Port Talbot and Bristol
✅ Bolster the UK’s clean energy security
The projects, paying £350/MW annually for a 10-year option period, now move into the 3–5 year consenting phase, with operations expected in the early 2030s.
Wind power already contributes ~30% of Britain’s electricity – floating wind promises to push that even further toward net zero.
🌬️ “With the areas’ deeper waters, we believe there is future potential for floating wind to play a role in unlocking the UK’s journey towards net zero,” said Melissa Read, Equinor’s Head of Regional Development UK.
