Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) is advancing plans to build a large-scale floating solar farm on the Bakun hydroelectric dam reservoir, targeting an initial 300 MW by 2027 — potentially Southeast Asia’s largest.
The project framework was formalized through an MoU signed last week between Sarawak’s Ministry of Utility and Telecommunications, China Three Gorges International, and Shanghai Electric Power T&D Group, aiming to explore up to 1,000 MW of floating solar potential at Bakun.
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg reaffirmed the state’s renewable ambitions:
✅ 1,500 MW of solar capacity by 2030
✅ 10 GW total generation by 2030, rising to 15 GW by 2035
✅ Positioning Sarawak as a regional clean energy leader and exporter through an interconnected Borneo and ASEAN Power Grid
The 2,400 MW Bakun dam, already a cornerstone of Sarawak’s hydropower supply, will now integrate large-scale floating solar. This follows SEB’s successful commissioning of Malaysia’s first hybrid hydro-solar plant (50 MW) at Batang Ai last year.
Sarawak is also studying a 1 GW floating solar project at Murum dam in collaboration with Masdar and Gentari.
SEB invites global partners to join its Renewable Energy and Sustainability Forum in Kuching, September 3–4, 2025.
