India plans 50 MW floating solar plant at nuclear site

Post Date:

State-owned Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) is advancing its clean energy vision by engaging French floating solar specialist Ciel & Terre to assess a floating solar PV plant at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP Units 1 & 2) in Tamil Nadu.

📍The proposed location? A seawater dyke—a shallow reservoir used to separate cooling water inflows and heated outflows at the nuclear plant.
☀️ Ciel & Terre has estimated the floating solar potential at approximately 50 MW.

This innovative dual-use of infrastructure:
🔹 Optimizes underutilized space
🔹 Reduces evaporation losses
🔹 Enhances the plant’s sustainability profile
🔹 Helps accelerate India’s clean energy goals while integrating with nuclear baseload generation
