Indonesia is targeting 103 GW of new power capacity by 2040, including:
• 75 GW from renewables (solar, wind, geothermal, biomass)
• 10 GW from nuclear
• 18 GW from gas
This will more than double current capacity, with nuclear playing a key role. Interest from Rosatom, EDF, NuScale and others is growing. Floating small modular reactors (SMRs) are being considered for eastern regions, while large single-site plants may be built in the west.
The government aims for a “phase-down, not phase-out” of coal, balancing economic growth with decarbonization. Projects may be co-financed through Indonesia’s new Danantara sovereign wealth fund.
