Ocean Winds celebrates the installation of Biohuts© at its EFGL project, becoming the world’s first nature-inclusive floating offshore wind farm

A global first: artificial marine habitats integrated into a floating offshore wind farm

Ocean Winds and Banque des Territoires have completed the installation of 32 Biohuts® from ECOCEAN on a floater of the EFGL (Éoliennes flottantes du golfe du Lion) pilot project. This marks the first time artificial marine habitats have been deployed within a floating offshore wind farm.

These steel-cage habitats replicate natural nurseries and offer shelter and food to post-larval fish—boosting biodiversity and contributing to the ecological restoration of offshore ecosystems.

The initiative is the result of a decade-long collaboration, grounded in earlier trials like the Biodiversity Observation Buoy (BoB) and backed by Université de Perpignan.

EFGL is now setting a new global benchmark for environmentally conscious offshore wind development, leading the way for future projects like EFLO and Ocean Winds’ wider floating wind portfolio.

Installation of the turbines is scheduled for summer 2025, 16 km off the French Mediterranean coast.
