MIT Launches Maritime Consortium to Tackle Emissions & Innovate the Future of Shipping

Post Date:

A new international consortium has been launched at MIT to accelerate the decarbonization of maritime shipping. The MIT Maritime Consortium brings together global industry leaders and MIT researchers to address challenges in nuclear propulsion, alternative fuels, hydrodynamic design, AI and autonomy, cybersecurity, and more.

Co-led by Prof. Themis Sapsis (MIT Center for Ocean Engineering) and Prof. Fotini Christia (MIT IDSS), this bold, interdisciplinary initiative will drive forward solutions aligned with IMO climate goals.

🔋 Key focus areas include:

Commercial maritime nuclear propulsion

Data-powered operations & autonomous shipping

Cyber-physical systems and anomaly detection

Additive manufacturing (3D printing) for shipboard use

Hydrodynamic performance and vessel efficiency

⚓ Floating nuclear solutions, a key topic for SFSS, are part of this major push—showcasing the global momentum toward sustainable ocean energy innovation.
