Associated British Ports (ABP) has submitted plans to develop what could become the UK’s largest floating solar farm — featuring 47,000 solar panels spread across Cavendish Dock in Barrow.
The floating solar array will generate clean electricity for Barrow’s advanced engineering sector, with a focus on supporting BAE Systems’ submarine manufacturing operations. According to the application, the solar farm could supply enough energy to power approximately 14,000 homes annually.
Key Highlights:
🔹 Solar panels to be mounted on floating pontoons, anchored securely to the dock bottom
🔹 Project supports ABP’s broader energy transition masterplan
🔹 Preserves port land for manufacturing and job creation
🔹 Public access and angling activities to be maintained, with minimal construction impact
🔹 Construction could begin this summer, with a 9–12 month timeline
This project represents a major step forward in combining clean energy production with coastal industrial development, demonstrating the value of floating solar in port environments.
