France Awards Two Floating Offshore Wind Farms in the Mediterranean

Post Date:

France has taken a significant step forward in its renewable energy journey by awarding tenders for two 250MW floating offshore wind farms in the Mediterranean Sea. These projects reflect the nation’s commitment to achieving 18GW of offshore wind capacity by 2035 and 45GW by 2050.

Key Highlights:
Narbonne Area Project: Awarded to Ocean Winds and Eolien en Mer Participation, located 25km off the coast between Agde and Port-la-Nouvelle, with a tariff of €92.70/MWh (US$96.80).
Gulf of Fos Project: Awarded to Eoliennes Méditerranée Grand Large (EDF Renewables and Maple Power), situated southwest of Fos-sur-Mer, with a tariff of €85.90/MWh (US$89.70).

📜 Commitments by the Winners:
1. Recycling of wind turbines, including blades and magnets.
2. Allocation of 10% of related activities to SMEs.
3. Financing or crowdfunding at least €10 million (US$10.5 million).
4. Mobilizing 400,000 hours of professional integration, benefiting individuals facing social or professional challenges.

🛠️ A Boost for France’s Marine Renewable Energy Sector:
Both consortia have pledged to support the development of a regional marine renewable energy industry, enhancing France’s energy independence and addressing its climate goals.

This announcement, along with previous awards and ongoing projects, brings France’s total offshore wind capacity (in service, under construction, or under development) to 5.3GW—a promising stride toward a cleaner and more sustainable future.
