President's Message

Message 28/2019

Mr Lim Soon Heng, PE, FIMarEST.

Founder President

Making way for SFSS Council 2020-2021

Time passes swiftly. The present council will have served its 2-year term in less than 3 months from now and will make way for a new one. It has been an eventful term and one that has impacted on engineers, architects, urban planners, developers and environmentalists. No longer do they need to be confined to terra firma when planning their next dream structure. The Society has and will continue to push boundaries in space creation. It aims to be a resource for the development of floating solutions in land scarce Singapore. As a solution in the fight against rising sea levels for coastal cities it is unparalleled.

I am honoured to have been the founder president. But it is time I make way for younger ones to take the helm.

Members of the society will elect a new council for 2020-2021 in the new year. I hope they will put in a place one as committed and as passionate as the first. I hope new faces will step forward to lead the society. However, it is just as important that some current council members remain to provide continuity.

All council members who have served a full 2-year term shall relinquish their position and if they wish they may offer themselves for election at the upcoming AGM (for whatever position they intend to fill) in the 2020-2021 Council.

Some council members were nominated and duly elected to join the council but have not completed a full 1-year term.   At the 2nd Council Meeting held on September 20th, 2019 at the NUSS Club at Suntec City, it was proposed and agreed that these members will proceed to the 2nd Council and serve out the full 2-year term in the position that they hold. On the expiry of the 2-year period, they may offer themselves for re-election. If such a council member would like to vacate his position to opt for another position (e.g. from Council member to Secretary or President say) he may do so by resigning his position and offer himself for election at the AGM in 2020.

Six positions in the Council are open to contest at the next AGM through election by ordinary members of the Society:

President1
1st Vice President1
2nd Vice President0
Treasurer1
Secretary1
Council Members2
Total6

It is a common practice that the President remain as Immediate Past President. There is no provision in our constitution, but I would be happy to continue as IPP if invited.

A member of the Society may nominate another member to stand for election in any of the positions in the council. All nominations will be considered by a Nomination Committee (appointed by the present council) which shall be empowered to approve or reject the any nominee.  Any member whose subscription is not in arrear is entitled to cast his vote for a nominee at the next Annual General Meeting.

I would encourage all members of the Society to participate in the upcoming process of renewal by identifying candidates who can provide effective leadership to sustain its mission, values and objectives for the next 2-year term from 2020-2021.
