The Society’s third Fellow Dr Koh Hock Seng
On May 9th 2009, the Council unanimously elected Dr Koh Hock Seng as Fellow of the Society, making him the third member to be conferred the title.
Dr Koh graduated from the University of Hamburg, Germany in 1985 with a master’s degree in Naval Architecture and holds a PhD in Naval Architecture from the German University.
He received the SAF Good Service Medal in 2003, and the Public Administration Bronze Medal in 2010 and several Defence Technology Prizes (Team), in recognition of the contributions to defence engineering.
He spearheaded the concept design and led the development of the mega floating platform, the Float@Marina Bay, engaging project stakeholders, government agencies and regulators including URA, PUB etc. The project won the Top 50 Engineering Feats @ IES-SG50 Award in 2016.
He has published several papers at international conferences and forums, and more recently a book chapter: Floating Performance Stage at the Marina Bay, Singapore (Chapter 2) by Koh, HS and Lim, YB in “Large Floating Structures: Technological Advances”. Edited by C. M. Wang and B. T. Wang: Springer, 2015.
A strong believer of the the potential of VLFS for space creation on water, he comes equipped with many years of experience in naval architecture, offshore floating solutions and systems, and floating LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) energy to power infrastructures.
In 2018 after almost 30-year careers with the Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA) and Pavilion Energy Pte Ltd Dr Koh looks forward to sharing his experience with stakeholders in the public and private sectors in meeting the twin problems of land scarcity and rising sea levels.
The Society’s two other Fellows are Mr Lim Soon Heng, who has more than 50 years in the design and construction of marine floating and fixed structures including piers, wharves and docks, and Professor Wang Chien Ming who has published extensively about floating structures.
