But as a recent CNA explainer points out, relying strictly on traditional land reclamation presents immense logistical and ecological challenges.
The Constraints of Traditional Reclamation:
🔹 Monumental Material Needs: As Singapore reclaims deeper waters, the required volume of infill skyrockets. A rough estimate suggests that an 800ha Long Island project at a 20m seabed depth could demand at least 160 million cubic meters of fill material—equivalent to 64,000 Olympic swimming pools!
🔹 Ecological Disruption: Heavy sand infill and traditional diking permanently alter marine ecosystems, posing a serious threat to the rich coral reefs and biodiversity around the southern offshore islands.
🔹 Long-Term Operational Costs: Even advanced alternatives like polder systems (such as the one used at Pulau Tekong) carry high engineering complexity and require continuous, costly pumping to keep the land dry.
The Floating Alternative:
