A major milestone for the integration of floating infrastructure and the Blue Economy! Norwegian floating solar company Alotta (formerly Inseaenergy) has successfully raised NOK 63.5 million (approx. USD 6.3 million) to accelerate its global expansion, hot on the heels of securing a landmark 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Mowi Chile, the world’s largest salmon producer.
Why this is a game-changer for floating solutions:
🔹 Decarbonizing Remote Operations: Many of the world’s aquaculture sites are off-grid and rely heavily on diesel generators. Mowi Chile’s operations alone consume an estimated 60 million liters of fuel annually. Alotta’s floating solar systems are designed to replace this massive diesel dependency with clean, quiet power directly at the farm sites.
🔹 Innovative “Energy-as-a-Service” Model: Aquaculture companies don’t have to become energy operators. Under this PPA model, Alotta owns and operates the floating solar arrays, while Mowi simply pays for the green kilowatt-hours produced.
🔹 First of Its Kind in Chile: The agreement will power Mowi’s Huar Norte salmon farming site in the Los Lagos region, proving that floating solar technology can scale internationally in demanding offshore/coastal environments.
🔹 Beyond Aquaculture: While currently focused on fish farming, Alotta’s model demonstrates the broader potential of floating solar to bring rapid, scalable renewable energy to remote coastal communities and offshore industrial sites worldwide.
