Newcleo-led consortium to develop floating nuclear plant

Industry News: Pioneering the Future of Floating Nuclear Energy! ⚛️🚢

A major step forward for marine-based clean energy! A consortium led by advanced reactor developer newcleo—alongside Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore and French engineering firm ABMI Groupe—has been awarded funding by Bpifrance to develop the conceptual design for a groundbreaking floating nuclear power plant.

Known as the n-Floating project, this initiative aims to merge advanced nuclear technology with established offshore engineering practices to create a scalable, commercially viable floating energy solution.

Key Project Highlights:

🔹 The Concept: A non-self-propelled nuclear barge engineered to host multiple 200 MWe Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

🔹 Next-Gen Tech: Utilizes newcleo’s Lead-cooled Fast Reactors (LFR-AS-200) to safely provide stable, low-carbon electricity and process heat.

🔹 Shipyard Standardization: Capitalizes on the advantages of floating infrastructure by allowing major plant systems to be standardized and constructed in a controlled shipyard environment before being towed to deployment locations.

🔹 Versatile Coastal Power: Designed to supply reliable energy to isolated regions, port infrastructure, and energy-intensive operations like desalination and green fuel production.

With an ambitious roadmap targeting industrial deployment by 2036, this project demonstrates how the maritime industry is becoming a critical player in the global decarbonization effort. At SFSS, we are thrilled to see offshore engineering breaking new ground to deliver firm, low-emission power without the traditional constraints of land-based development! 🌊🔋
