Senegal is taking a massive leap forward in sustainable food production! To combat dwindling wild fish stocks and scale up domestic aquaculture, Senegal’s National Aquaculture Agency (ANA) has officially installed the country’s first marine floating fish cages off the coast of Palmarin.

✅ Pioneering Pilot Project: Developed in partnership with local firm Atlantic Mariculture, the initial pilot features two massive 25-meter diameter floating cages deployed in the open ocean.
✅ Harnessing Natural Ocean Dynamics:Moving aquaculture offshore takes advantage of tides and coastal currents that continuously renew the water. This natural exchange significantly improves environmental conditions, fish health, and boosts production potential compared to traditional inland ponds.
✅ Strategic Scale-Up: This initial $607,000 USD investment is just the beginning. It serves as a vital proof-of-concept to assess the technical feasibility for larger-scale deployment. Senegal aims to increase its national aquaculture output from roughly 3,000 tonnes to a staggering 20,000 tonnes by 2030.
✅ Socio-Economic Impact: With 300 hectares allocated by local authorities for future development, the marine farm is projected to create up to 400 direct and 1,000 indirect jobs across the value chain.
