India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is working on a dedicated scheme to promote floating solar projects, according to MNRE Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi.
Speaking at the 13th Foundation Day of the National Solar Energy Federation of India, Sarangi said the ministry is looking at ways to ensure that land does not become a constraint for solar deployment. The proposed scheme is expected to encourage Indian states to develop larger-scale floating solar projects, which have so far not reached their full potential.
Floating solar projects involve installing solar panel systems on water bodies. These systems can help address land availability challenges and may also benefit from the cooling effect of water, improving energy efficiency compared with some land-based systems.
According to the report, India’s installed solar capacity increased from 2.82 GW in March 2014 to 150.26 GW in March 2026, while floating solar capacity currently stands at around 700 MW.
