Seattle has introduced the world’s first light rail system operating on a floating bridge across Lake Washington, marking a significant advancement in infrastructure engineering.

The project, developed by Sound Transit, required innovative solutions to address the movement of floating structures. Engineers implemented flexible track systems and lightweight materials to ensure stability while accommodating wave, wind, and load variations.

The system is part of a new connection linking Seattle to nearby Bellevue, providing an alternative to car commuting and helping reduce congestion. Tens of thousands of passengers are expected to use the line daily, significantly lowering vehicle miles traveled.

The project demonstrates how floating infrastructure can be extended beyond energy applications into large-scale transport systems, opening new possibilities for cities facing geographic constraints.
