Abu Dhabi-based renewable energy company Masdar has signed an agreement to develop the largest floating solar power project in Southeast Asia, marking its first partnership in Malaysia.

The project involves a 200 MW floating photovoltaic plant at Chereh Dam in Pahang, spanning approximately 950 acres of reservoir surface and delivering more than 300 MW-peak of clean electricity—enough to supply over 100,000 homes. The estimated project value exceeds $208 million.

Masdar is developing the project alongside Malaysian partners Citaglobal and Tiza Global, under a power purchase agreement with national utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad. The project supports Malaysia’s ambition to generate 35% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.

The Chereh Dam installation will be the first project under a broader 10 GW renewable energy roadmap agreed between Masdar and Malaysian authorities. Designed to optimize performance while conserving freshwater, the floating solar plant highlights the growing role of water-based solar in land-constrained regions.
