The Indian state of Odisha is planning to develop large-scale floating solar power projects to address land scarcity and accelerate renewable energy deployment. According to the Grid Corporation of Odisha Ltd (GRIDCO), the state intends to utilise its extensive network of reservoirs and water bodies for solar generation.

Planned projects include a 225 MW floating solar plant at Upper Indravati and a 1.5 GW project at the Hirakud reservoir, following an earlier 1 GW tender issued for the Rengali reservoir. Officials note that Odisha has limited land available for ground-mounted solar due to agricultural use and forest coverage.

Floating solar panels benefit from the cooling effect of water, improving efficiency while also reducing maintenance needs. The initiative supports Odisha’s broader goals of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and expanding green energy in a state with significant industrial activity.
