Ocean Winds, a joint venture between Portugal’s EDP Renewables and France’s Engie, has secured seabed lease rights to develop a 1.5 gigawatt floating offshore wind farm in the Celtic Sea, according to Britain’s Crown Estate. The project will be located off the coast of Wales and South West England.

The development forms part of the UK’s broader strategy to expand offshore wind capacity to 43–50 GW by 2030, as the country works toward decarbonising its electricity sector. Floating wind technology enables deployment in deeper waters, unlocking access to stronger and more consistent wind resources than traditional fixed-bottom projects.

Ocean Winds will pay an annual lease fee of £350 per megawatt, amounting to approximately £525,000 per year for the site. The Celtic Sea leasing round now includes three floating wind projects, which together could supply electricity to around four million homes and support more than 5,000 jobs, according to the Crown Estate.
