Planning permission has been approved for a floating solar farm described as the largest in the UK, to be installed at Cavendish Dock at the Port of Barrow in Cumbria.

Developed by Associated British Ports (ABP), the project will feature 46,500 floating solar panels capable of producing enough energy to power around 14,000 homes annually. The renewable electricity will support the local advanced manufacturing sector, including BAE Systems’ submarine operations.

The development includes measures to support biodiversity, such as seabird nesting rafts, floating reed beds, and artificial habitats beneath the panels. The floating solar farm forms part of wider plans to redevelop the Port of Barrow and strengthen its renewable energy infrastructure.
