Taiwan’s efforts to expand floating solar photovoltaic systems on reservoirs and fish farms are facing challenges not only from extreme weather, but also from misinformation. After typhoon damage to floating PV arrays, online videos and claims suggested toxic pollution, prompting public concern.

Government inspections and laboratory tests later confirmed that no heavy metals or oil contamination were present, and that unusual water coloration was caused by natural soil conditions. Independent fact-checkers also identified some viral content as AI-generated or misleading.

The case highlights the importance of clear public communication, scientific literacy, and transparent regulation as Taiwan continues to scale up renewable energy projects, including floating solar integrated with aquaculture.
