Samsung Heavy Industries has received Approval in Principle (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping for a floating nuclear power platform incorporating two SMART100 small modular reactors, developed by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI).

The certified concept integrates SMRs into a floating marine structure using a modular compartment-based design, allowing different SMR types to be installed with minimal redesign. Key safety systems are housed within a single containment vessel, enabling land-based testing before offshore installation and helping to shorten construction timelines.

The floating SMR platform is positioned as a flexible and scalable solution for offshore nuclear power generation, supporting future applications such as electricity production and desalination. The certification marks an important step toward commercial deployment of marine nuclear energy systems.
