Italian energy group Eni and its partners have approved the construction of Coral North, the second floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) platform in the Rovuma Basin offshore Mozambique.

The Coral North unit will:

  • Double Mozambique’s LNG output to more than 7 million tons per year.
  • Generate $23 billion in tax revenues and create additional jobs.
  • Allocate $3 billion in contracts to local companies.

Scheduled for operation in 2028, Coral North will replicate the success of Coral South, which began exports to Europe in 2022. The offshore floating design mitigates delays and security risks affecting onshore LNG projects in northern Mozambique.

The project will be delivered by a joint venture including:

  • Eni (50%)
  • China National Petroleum Company (20%)
  • Korea Gas Corporation (10%)
  • Mozambican state-owned ENH (10%)
  • ADNOC’s subsidiary XRG (10%)
