SINN Power, a German developer of floating renewable energy solutions, has commissioned the world’s first vertical floating photovoltaic system at the Jais gravel pit in Starnberg, Bavaria. The 1.87 MW plant is expected to generate around 2 GWh annually, covering only 4.65% of the lake’s surface.

The innovative SKipp system uses vertical east–west module orientation with open water corridors at least four meters wide, enhancing output during morning and evening hours. A keel-like substructure allows controlled movement under wind loads and fluctuating water levels.

Early operation shows nearly 60% reduction in grid power use, with expectations of up to 70% as production stabilizes. Environmental monitoring indicates no negative impacts, and the installation has created new habitats for fish and breeding waterfowl.

A second 1.7 MW phase is planned, keeping total lake coverage below 10%. Designed for scalability, the system can also be adapted for offshore applications.
