Britain and the United States are exploring floating nuclear power plants and reactor-powered container ships under a new push for advanced nuclear technology.
Floating nuclear plants, mounted on barges, could be rapidly deployed to supply power to data centers, steel mills, cement plants, or port infrastructure without requiring planning permission. Nuclear-powered container ships offer faster speeds and reduced carbon emissions compared to conventional diesel or LNG-powered vessels.
The agreement, signed by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and President Donald Trump, also envisions a bilateral maritime nuclear corridor, allowing nuclear-powered ships to travel between the UK and US, enhancing energy security and supporting industrial operations ⚡🚢.
Core Power, backed by Hyundai and Bill Gates’ TerraPower, is developing these molten salt reactor-based vessels, designed with multiple layers of protection to ensure safety. Even in extreme scenarios, the design prevents reactor meltdown and contains nuclear material securely.
This initiative could signal a new era of mobile, low-carbon energy, combining nuclear power with maritime innovation to support industries and AI infrastructure.
