Norway Explores Floating Nuclear Power to Cut Emissions

Post Date:

Norwegian developers Norsk Kjernekraft and Ocean-Power AS are collaborating to explore the concept of floating nuclear power plants using small modular reactors (SMRs). The barges would each host 200–250 MW reactors, capable of delivering emission-free electricity to remote industrial hubs, offshore installations, or the onshore grid, while minimizing land use.

The partnership combines nuclear expertise with maritime engineering, aiming to create flexible, low-carbon energy solutions. Plans include assessing concepts, technologies, and business models under Norwegian regulations, with potential to develop exportable barge-mounted nuclear solutions.

This initiative aligns with Norway’s shift from petroleum activities towards sustainable industrial ventures, contributing to climate goals and building on Nordic engineering expertise.
