Plans for the largest floating solar farm in the UK have been approved as part of the £100m redevelopment of the historic Ice Factory complex at Grimsby docks. The floating solar panels will cover an area larger than the pitch at Wembley Stadium and, together with other renewable energy sources, provide free heating and power to tenants for the next 25 years.
The redevelopment includes a 1,000-seat events venue, conference centre, offices, a 161-bedroom hotel, a public outdoor swimming pool, restaurants, a marine centre, and a hub for offshore wind and maritime research. While full completion is expected to take three years, some tenants may move in as early as next year.
The Ice Factory, originally built in 1900 for Grimsby’s trawler fleet, will retain many of its historic features, including the industrial conveyers connecting different parts of the complex.
