Typhoon Danas has caused significant damage to floating solar platforms off the coast of Pingtung County. The storm scattered debris from offshore Jiadong Township across an area stretching more than one kilometer. The platforms, developed by Sun Rise E&T Corp., were part of a 160,000-square-meter offshore floating solar power project approved by Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs in 2023. Fortunately, the platforms had not yet been fitted with solar panels, minimizing the impact on the marine ecosystem.

In response, Pingtung’s Marine and Fisheries Management Office has ordered the company to remove all scattered debris by Wednesday and submit a repair or reconstruction plan for county government review. Operations may not resume until the plan is approved. The company has recovered about 60% of the approximately 1,400 floating platforms deployed in the area, with most sustaining only minor damage. Local fishermen have expressed concerns that the drifting platforms could interfere with fishing vessel navigation. The county government is working with the company on a comprehensive assessment to address any design flaws.
