China is at the forefront of sustainable AI infrastructure with its development of undersea data centers. These submerged facilities use seawater for cooling and are powered by renewable energy sources, significantly reducing their environmental impact.

The Shanghai-based project by Hailanyun Technology is set to begin operations in September 2025. The first phase will include 198 server racks, supporting up to 792 AI-capable servers. The center aims to complete tasks equivalent to training GPT-3.5 in just one day.

This initiative marks a significant step towards integrating sustainability into AI infrastructure, potentially influencing global standards in the industry.
