The Floating Island for Foreign Workers

Post Date:

We are thrilled to share a design concept by our President, Mr. Lim Soon Heng, in collaboration with Torrisi & Procopio Architetti. This innovative floating island is designed to provide a safe, comfortable, and community-oriented living space for foreign workers.

The Concept:

The floating island consists of a cluster of four hexagon-shaped concrete floating platforms, designed to accommodate up to 2,295 residents in 765 specially modified container cabins.

  • Residential Platforms (D1, D2, D3): Each of these platforms can house up to 765 workers in 255 20-ft containers. Each container includes a toilet, a corner for coffee/tea, and can accommodate 2-3 people. The design features ample windows on both sides for natural lighting and ventilation. Showers, changing rooms, and storage spaces are located in the basement. The ground floor is an open area for residents to enjoy their meals. Additionally, each platform has a dedicated common area with a mega screen, stage for performances, garden, pool, and a kiosk for drinks and snacks.
  • Community Center Platform (C): This platform serves as the heart of the floating island. The ground floor hosts two bars/cafés, two restaurants (with services such as storerooms, toilets, and kitchens in the basement), a 7-Eleven store, a laundry, and a central kitchen to prepare meals for the residential platforms. The first floor includes a library/bookshop, gym, media store, barber shop, Western Union outlet, and various shops. At the top, a lush roof garden provides a tranquil space for relaxation and reading away from the hustle and bustle below.
